Children’s Swimming

Portage Pool offers group lessons to children and youth starting as young as 6 months. Portage Pool is an affiliate of the Canadian Red Cross and offers the Canadian Red Cross Swim Kids and Preschool curricula. The Red Cross Swim program is a national program.

Red Cross Preschoolsea-otter

The Red Cross Preschool program is for children aged 6 months to 6 years. The first two levels of the Preschool program are parented, meaning that one parent or guardian accompanies the child in the water during each lesson. Babies and caregivers work with a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor on the following skills in these participation based courses:

  • Starfish: getting wet, buoyancy and movement, front, back and vertical position in the water, and shallow water entries and exits. Ratio: 1 instructor : 12 participants.
  • Duck: rhythmic breathing, moving forward and backward, front and back float with recovery, and shallow water entries and exits.

Red Cross Swim Kids

The Red Cross Swim Kids program is for children aged 5 years and up. We recommend swimmers remain in Preschool levels until age 6.
