Winter is here, and we loooove participating in ice activities! But did you know that most ice-related drownings occur on lakes with changing conditions due to varying temperature conditions, currents, and snow, requiring ice to be measured in several places? Check out this informational brochure for some ice safety tips this season, like
- Always check the ice thickness before going out.
- If you break through – don’t panic.
- Caregivers of children aged 5 and younger should stay close, hold hands, and remind toddlers to wait.
And of course, get trained! Portage Pool swimming lessons include ice safety information and even rescue practice. Keep an eye out for Ice Specific Swim to Survive classes at the pool, where you’ll get into some clothes and practice the Swim to Survive standard, as well as self-rescue through fake ice!
